Pearl Jewelry Maintains
Pearl Maintains
Pearls are organic gemstones and they are not like other types of gemstone jewelry, they are very sensitive to both chemical and physical environmental influences, due to their properties of chemical composition and physical structure. The damaging result is normally only seen after a prolonged period of wear or after the pearls were unnecessarily exposed to certain risks. Pearls are normally more resistant than one might expect if they are caring in proper way.
Cultured pearls with thick nacre and freshwater cultured pearls without a mother-of-pearl nucleus are less sensitive than pearls with a thin nacre thickness and cultured blister pearls.
Pearls consist mainly of calcium carbonate which is attached by acid. This indicates that pearls should not be brought into contact with acid. One of the main risks comes from the human skin, which produces sweat containing salt, a number of trace elements and different acids as for instance uric acid.
Acids will be transported from the skin of the wearer along the string of a necklace into the drill holes of the pearls and may cause the drill holes to enlarge. This is especially true for the pearls near the clasp of a necklace, which lie flush against the skin of the wearer around the neck. Pearls in earl jewelry are also attacked more easily.
Conchiolin is also sensitive to outer influences. When it dehydrates, tiny fractures will be produced, which cause dull spots and discoloration of the surface. This is one of the reasons why is recommended not to leave pearls in drawers or cupboards, for years they may start to dry out. Instead, it is recommended to wear pearls normally and regularly, thus exposing them from time to time to the natural humidity of the air of the human skin.
The process of drying out takes place more quickly in warm or hot surroundings. It is therefore recommended to avoid keeping pearls near any type of heating and to avoid exposing them to strong lighting, even in show cases, over a prolonged period. Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight should also be avoided; the same is true for sauna sessions. It’s also recommended to avoid wearing pearls at the hairdressers or when using a hair drier.
A high degree of humidity will make the conchiolin substance swell, and this is one more reason why pearls should not come into prolonged direct contact with the human skin. Pearls should not be worn when taking a bath or a shower, and the same is for swimming.
Pearls should not be brought into contact with cosmetic products which contain fat, acids and bleaching or coloring agent. This includes skin cream, lotion, spray, perfume, make-up, soap, shampoos, and hair dying agents etc. Hair spray is real danger. This means that pearls must be taken off when one visits a hairdresser. It is generally recommended to take the pearls off until one is finally dressed and made up and not to wear pearls directly on a skin which had been in contact with cosmetic products.
Pearls should not be worn when doing housework and not bring them into contact with cleaning products. The kitchen is not the right place for pearls. It’s suitable for wearing pearls for dinner but the pearls should not be left on a dining table where they could come into contact with vinegar, salad dressings or fruit juices.
It is recommended regular cleaning of pearls with a soft cloth, impregnated with alcohol, after wearing because remains of sweat and dirt can be cleaned away easily with alcohol.
A pearl jewelry should be regular check and cleaning at least once a year, and the jeweler should be able to restring the necklace at the same tome. A competent jeweler will use pure silk threads, with the exception of special elastic wire threads, and have each pearl knotted separately. This kind of professional cleaning and checking of pearl necklace could be done without any charging fees.
Ultrasonic cleaning should be done with care because it probably affect pearls with a thin nacre layer, over-treated pearls and cultured blister pearls and imitation pearls.
The best method is to clean pearls in water which the owner can do it by herself regularly. The heavy dirty can be removed by a tissue or a dental stick, then the pearls will be immersed in lukewarm water with a few drops of dishwashing for around 15 minutes. Salt or alcohol can be used, too. The pearls have to be cleaned under running water several times during the cleaning process. After last rinse, the pearls are spread out on a soft cloth for at least 24 hours. Every two to three years, the pearls should be treated with olive oil in order to help them preserve their luster and appearance. After cleaning, the necklace should not be worn until the string is dry. And if restring a necklace, the drill holes of the pearls should be cleaned several times by running a clean string through them.
Pearls are easy to get scratch because their 3.5 to 4.5 hardness on Mohs’ scale. So it is recommended not to keep them in a jewelry box together with other pieces of jewelry, as precious metal and other gemstones may scratch them. Pearls can be store separately in small bags, but not necessarily put them in plastic bags or cotton where they may dry out.
Mabe pearls should be handled with care because their outer layer is ultrathin and break easily or develops fractures in daily wear. They should not be cleaned in soap water or by ultrasonic cleaning. Otherwise the outer layer may be loose and be removed like a hat.
